Bupe Mwambingu, Biodiversity Partnerships Manager at Basecamp Research

Bupe is a Biodiversity Partnerships Manager at Basecamp Research. She works on developing global commercial biodiscovery research partnerships that facilitate fair access and benefit-sharing arrangements for commercial biotechnology R&D so as to develop sustainable and renewable products and applications. Bupe ensures compliance with local, national, and international regulations, including the UN-Nagoya Protocol and the UN Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD) principles for Access and Benefit Sharing, and monitors new policy developments in various regions around the globe associated with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) and other related legal frameworks such as the UN High Seas Treaty (BBNJ). Bupe is committed to advancing scientific innovation and technological capacity development in Africa, particularly in the life science industry and molecular biology. Her main goal is to establish robust collaborative partnerships that can provide support and help build Basecamp Research’s unique nature graph database. This database contains novel proteins and enzymes known as Digital Sequence Information (DSI), derived from Earth’s microbial diversity, which can be applied in various industries. The aim is to use this platform for discovery and support the development of new and innovative products. She is also committed to increasing skills excellence and advancing science and innovation in Africa. Bupe is a well-known industry expert who has consistently participated in high-level international meetings such as the UN-COP meetings. These meetings are important for discussing and negotiating policies related to Access and Benefit-sharing of the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) and Digital Sequence Information (DSI). Bupe is also part of the informal advisory committee to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (UN-CBD) ABS Clearing House. Bupe holds a Master’s degree in Forensic Science and Technology, a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Forensic Science (Biology), and a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. Her work experience is diverse and includes business development, financial services operations, project and team development, science communication, and international policy negotiations. Bupe has facilitated capacity development through skills training and technology transfer as part of benefit-sharing activities associated with project activities for Commercial research, academia and the financial industry. During her career, she has developed a deep understanding of the cultural, technical, economic, and social challenges associated with large international partnerships involving multiple stakeholders and implementing policies and laws in several partner countries in Africa, Europe, and the USA.
